We sat down with Naked & Famous founder Brandon Svarc and asked about his business, future, resources and what he likes and dislikes about the “jean game”. Check out the interview on the next page. Also check out the product at NakedandFamousDenim.com
CS: What era do you think you get your inspiration from?
BS: We pull a lot of fabric inspiration from work wear of the early 1900s. We love tough and durable raw denim.
CS: What denim trend do you wish went away immediately?
BS: Well I hate over-embellished and distressed denim. But I don’t wish it went away… then who would we make fun of?
CS: What celebrities have worn your denim and if not who do you think would look the best in them?
BS: Some of the staff at Barneys Beverley Hills told me of a few celebrities who bought our jeans, but I don’t really care. As a general rule, I imagine the best looking ones would probably look best.
CS: Whats the next big thing in denim?
BS: I’m not sure, but the next heaviest thing in denim is our 24oz selvedge denim, which is the heaviest denim ever created.
CS: Anyone you want to work with ? Companies or Artists?
BS: We’d love to make some badass footwear so we are looking at a few Canadian heritage footwear companies for production or perhaps a collaboration.
CS: What do you love/hate about the denim of today?
BS: I love raw denim! I hate crappy distressed denim that retails for $250.
CS: Have you ever thought of branching out into other departments other than denim?
BS: Yes. And we already have. We have amazing shirts that are made in the oldest existing shirt factory in North America. We have ties, suits, belts, baseball gloves and will soon make some heavy duty canvas bags as well.
CS: Why Japan? Why Canada?
BS: “Why Japan?” would take too long to answer completely. In short: amazing selvedge denim, innovative blended denim, rope-dyeing, unique Japanese water quality, efficiency, culture and heritage.
Canada, because this is where we are from. My grandfather started our company 57 years ago here in Montreal, and we make all our products locally in the factories that we know and trust for all these years.
We want to thank Brandon Svarc for giving us some of his time and wish him luck in the future of Naked and Famous Denim. Again , the website is NakedandFamousdenim.com.
