According to the man himself, Jay-Z has left long time label Def Jam Records, which he has been heavily involved with for the past several years. However, he does owe them one more album. Jay-Z, whose real name is Sean Carter, has not given a specific reason for the split but has said that his time here has been ” a unique and fulfilling experience”.

Apparently its rumored that Jay bought himself out of his contract for a cool $5 million. During his time with Def Jam , he also started his own record company, Roc Nation. It is within this label that he is currently working on The Blueprint 3 since last year , involving Kanye West.
But on another note, Jay-Z feels that this move might of made him too free and without deadlines.
“If I don’t have any time constraints, I’ll mess around, I’ll never get it done,” HOV said. “I’ll be Axl Rose out here! It’ll be 12 years later, and we’ll be talking about Chinese Democracy. I really like the [time constraints]. But whatever happens, [the album] may turn out better, ’cause it’ll be done when it’s right.”
It is also rumored that Jay-Z wants Roc Nation to be a Super Label, competing with Def Jam. Def jam responded that they are nervous about this revelation because they are unsure if he plans on recruiting names such as Rhianna and Ne-yo and even Beyonce.
